The New York City Chapter of Buddhist Peace Fellowship invites you to become active in these ways:
  • In the NY Times of May 29, 2004, Nicholas Kristof wrote about the genocide against the black Africans native in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Kofi Anaan has called this situation another Rwanda in the making. Download a letter/fax that you can send to our senators, President Bush, and Secretary Powell to protest this situation and urge their active involvement.
  • Download three current letters, based on actions recommended by Amnesty International, that protest abuse of human rights in Cuba, the Philippines, and Syria. download a letter to support their efforts.
  • According to reports, in Falluja alone, hundreds of Iraqis have been killed and hundreds more injured since attacks began on Sunday, April 4. Please download letters to send to your senators. The letters ask our senators to convene an emergency joint session of Congress to address the crisis in Iraq and to change the course of U.S. action.
  • A Bill has been proposed in the US House of Representatives that would establish a Peace Tax Fund for people who choose to put their taxes only towards non-military purposes. You can read about this bill, HR 2037, by downloading our flyer. You can also learn more about the Peace Tax Fund Bill here.

    There has also been discussion in the New York City Council about a resolution that would support the Bill that is in Congress. We urge you to download a letter to send to your City Council Member to express your support for this resolution.

  • Mr. Mohammed Junaid is being detained at Sussex County Jail in New Jersey after being moved from 26 Federal Plaza to Buffalo Federal Detention Center and to Elizabeth Detention Center. Mr. Junaid's family is facing severe hardship because of his detention. You can learn more about his case and download a letter to send to Chris Shanahan Supervisory Deportation Officer, supporting Mr. Junaid's release on Humanitarian Parole.
  • Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) monk Thich Tri Luc was kidnapped in Phnom Penh in July 2002 and is now awaiting trial in Vietnam. He has been detained secretly in jail for over 12 months without any notification to his family or the UBCV. Please download a letter to advocate for Thich Tri Luc.
  • On June 24, 2003, U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) introduced HR 2574, the Federal Death Penalty Abolition Act of 2003. This legislation, which is a companion bill to Senate legislation introduced by Senator Feingold (D-WI), will put an immediate halt to executions and forbid the imposition of the death penalty as a sentence for violations of federal law. Please download a letter to send to your U.S. Representative to urge him/her to co-sponsor and support this important legislation.

  • The New York City chapter of Buddhist Peace Fellowship works with the national office to bring together people in prison with people on the outside who want to communicate about their practice of the dharma.   • The Buddhist Peace Fellowship sponsors and coordinates various BASE programs across the country. BASE (Buddhist Alliance for Social Engagement) provides six month support communities for the study and practice of socially engaged Buddhism. Participants work or volunteer in service or social action, and meet regularly for study, support, discussion, training, and meditation. Groups have weekly meetings and monthly retreat days. There are people who are interested in starting a BASE program in New York City. You can download PART A and PART B of the BASE handbook here.
